Why Write?

by Starla J. King on March 2, 2012

Because we find ourselves there.

There on the page, the screen, the little scrap of napkin you grabbed at the coffee shop when a thought hit you and begged to be written.

Susan Wooldridge (in Poem Crazy) suggests we collect words. I suggest we (also) collect thoughts.  Unfiltered, uncensored, unedited thoughts.

Private thoughts.  Thoughts we write just so we can “hear” them as they come out.  Messy thoughts.  Painful thoughts.  Scare the hell out of you thoughts.

“I want” thoughts and “I need” thoughts and questioning questioning questioning thoughts.

Because in that stream of thoughts you expose your heart.

Gurumayi Chidvilasananda says “The heart is the resting place of the mind.” So … when you put your heart on paper, the paper too becomes the resting place of the mind.

Give your mind a rest. Give your thoughts a (private) voice.

Write.
