The Big Year of Little Things

by Starla J. King on December 29, 2011

I bought a tiny plant today… for a little wall planter … in our small city apartment.

And oh did it ever make me happy.

Those 4 itsy bitsy leaves on teeeeny stems are just so damn cute that I can’t help but grin each time I turn the corner and see the lil’ green guy just hanging out there in all his adorable littleness.  Heart-melting actually.

It’s the little things that matter, they say…and many of us nod in absolute agreement that oh yes, it really is the little things that matter.

So why, when it comes to the very important task of LIVING, do the little things so often get overlooked, overrun, trampled ruthlessly in our mad rush to find and achieve bigger, better, more and higher??

What if it really… I mean REALLY… is the little things that matter?

What if that tiny little plant hanging in its little planter is the thing that will keep my heart open enough to offer a hint of love in my smile as I pass a sorrowful-looking stranger on the sidewalk tomorrow.. and he takes that smile home to his family instead of his all-too-familiar anger.

Too big a stretch?  Maybe.  Or maybe not.

Books start with one letter.

Relationships start with a look, or a word, or a smile.

A second  to a minute to an hour to a day to a week to a month to a year to a decade to an era.

An observation to a thought to a question to a pondering to a theory to a belief to an entire belief system.

A person to a family to a tribe to a generation to a culture to a civilization.

Little things really do matter… because in reality, the little things are what pave our path to the really big things.

Me?  I’ve got some grand goals for 2012… and I can tell you right now that the only way I’m going to reach those goals is to harness up the love and energy and inspiration I get from a gazillion little things along the way.

Yes. I feel like a broken record commenting on your blog posts… but that’s what i keep hearing in my head!

The little things really do matter…. and it’s a cliche, but cliches are what they are for a reason 🙂

Our small, daily, choices tend to have more impact (especially the consciously chosen actions, done consistently) than the ‘great-big-life-changing’ choices we tend to look to for impact.

I really love this, and of course as I was reading it I was considering my own blog post for the future 😉

Happy New Year, my friend. May it be one of many meaningful little things…

Angel, I LOVE that these posts so resonate with you AND that they spark ideas for your own posts! WRITE, woman, WRITE! 🙂

So the word “consistently” keeps coming up for me… and seeing it in the context of “the little things” is quiet powerful. Thank you for that.
