Take it or leave it, as a new year dawns

by Starla J. King on December 30, 2014

I find the threshold of a new calendar year to be a delicious time of reflection and intention-setting.

We can stumble sleepily over that threshold into the next year and carry on with the same burdens and stale dreams, or we can step wide awake into the new year carrying only that which we choose.

We get to honor the past year of life by re-savoring the memories, celebrating our successes, and acknowledging our growth since this time last year, then leaving the past gently as we choose what to take into the next year.

We get to re-select our dreams, revive our hopes, and re-claim our time and our selves as we pack our suitcase of intentions to carry into the next year.

Take it or leave it — the choice is yours, and what better time to choose than at the turn of a year?

Set aside 10 minutes to pay attention to this threshold time of year.

Write a list titled Take It — things you choose to carry with you into the following year (feelings, memories, things, hopes, intentions; it’s up to you).  Put this list where you will see it regularly, a positive spark whenever you need it.

Then write a list titled Leave It — things you choose to leave in the past.  Put this list … in the shredder, the fireplace, that lake near your house, the ocean, and let it go.  Forever.

2014 has been; 2015 awaits:

“Love calls – everywhere and always.
We’re sky bound.
Are you coming?”

Shirley Hershey Showalter is going to Florida. It was ten degrees in Virginia when she promoted your book, Wide Awake. Every Day. on her Facebook page.
